Speech Language Therapist

Overall Role:

The Speech Language Therapist will work as part of a team to maximize students’ participation and growth in all areas of the curriculum. Areas of focus for speech language therapy services may be in one or more of the following essential foundational areas, each of which could act as a barrier to optimal learning: language, speech, voice, fluency and oro-motor functioning. The successful applicant would need to be familiar with a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) programme and able to support students in Secondary School, with knowledge of the MYP/ DP an advantage.
Specific Tasks:

Professional Expectations

• Provide appropriate evaluation services to students in order to determine individual learning needs.

Support for Individual Students
• Liaise with the classroom teacher, learning support teacher and parents to determine appropriate programme for individual students, and assist further in one or more of the following ways:
o Perform interventions to support development in identified area(s)
o Consult with teachers and help with the modification of materials for in-class work
o Consult with teachers and parents to give advice, information and support
o Prescribe communication aids and devices
o Provide in-class support (when required)

Teacher Support & Consultation
• Conduct classroom observations
• Complete in-service training for NIST staff
• Consult with teachers in identifying student learning problems
• Recommend teaching techniques and approaches that will assist individual teachers
• Participate in case study meetings
• Attend and participate in support services meetings
• Participate in parent/teacher conferences when appropriate
• Act as case manager for students on caseload
• Liaise with the Learning Support Team Leader

Planning & Organization
• Selects and review personal teaching strategies and programmes of study in line with the school’s curriculum and its mission, vision and values

Professional Commitment
• Take part in departmental or team meetings to discuss programmes of study, teaching methods, assessment, equipment and materials
• Carry out teaching-related tasks as requested by leadership
• Participate in year-level or subject-based field trips as requested
• Support the school and its programmes in a professional and collegial manner

Professional Development
• Contribute to and participate in professional growth conversations
• Maintain and develop technology skills
• Take part in professional development activities as and when requested by the school’s leadership
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of subjects taught
• Perform duties in accordance with the NIST Child Safeguarding Code of Conduct and NIST Professional Code of Conduct
• Support the school community, professional standards and trust
• Demonstrate the learner profile attributes/dispositions at all times
• Complete all duties as defined by the school's leadership
