St. Mary’s International School was founded in 1954. It moved to its current location in Setagaya ward in 1971.

At St. Mary’s, we nurture the intellectual, physical, emotional and social development of each student. Middle School Design Technology

The ideal candidate for this position will have a middle school endorsement, experience teaching middle school students and have a passion for dealing with this level of education. Currently the position includes 6th grade design technology that is integrated with 6th grade art, 6th-8th grade classes on digital citizenship, and 7th and 8th grade design technology electives. Skills and experience with laser printers, 3D printers, digital photography, design software and robotics are also important. An after-school Art and Design Club is offered by the design technology teacher and, in addition, the person hired for this position will work with middle school teachers to integrate technology and design thinking into their classes.

Elementary School Learning Support Teacher

St. Mary’s International School is seeking an experienced learning lupport teacher for our elementary school. We are a K-12 Catholic international all-boys school in Tokyo, and our elementary school encompasses Grades RP-5 (our Readiness Program is equivalent to kindergarten). The learning support teacher works in a team of six support staff members (three learning support and three ESL), works with the classroom teachers to help them meet the learning needs of the students in the mainstream classroom as well as participating in push-in and pull-out when needed for students who have been identified for extra modifications. This role has the possibility of further advancement to a coordinator role.

It is also essential that the Learning Support teacher has a strong knowledge of the latest learning support policies and best practices. The successful applicant must be able to work with leaders and teachers to ensure development of all students and be an excellent communicator who can work with a variety of stakeholders.

The job description for the position includes the following:
• Work with the learning support team, together with the principals, to ensure that all students with identified special needs have support where needed
• Work as a team member for providing learning support to students
• Monitor and record student learning progress and provide teachers with information as needed
• Keep detailed and regularly updated records of observations, individual student meetings, parent meetings and teacher feedback
• Liaise on a regular basis with individual classroom teachers to provide support in the provision of enrichment and extension programs
• Use the school’s summative assessment data to inform and track student progress

High School Counselor

St. Mary’s International School is seeking a high school counselor to join a team of three reporting to the high school administrative team. We are a Catholic international all-boys school in Tokyo, which follows the IB curriculum (DP). You will be one of two grade 10-12 counselors who work with students to empower them to be successful in high school. A major focus of the job will be to develop students’ college plans and support them through the application process. There are approximately 70 seniors in a year. Our students apply to universities in the US, Japan, Canada, UK, Korea, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Preferred candidates will:
Have at least a master’s degree in counseling;
Have at least three years experience in college counseling;
Have experience with a variety of university systems including U.S., Japan, Canada, Korea, Australia, and U.K.;
Have a growth mindset and be a team player. We are always learning;
Have strong writing and organizational skills, including the ability to juggle writing letters of recommendation and supporting student essay writing.;
Be familiar with the IB program ;
Be sensitive to cultural differences ;
Be skilled in the use of Google Docs and willing to learn Maia Learning;
Have experience organizing college fairs and events;
Be comfortable task switching in a fast paced environment;
Be comfortable speaking, reading and writing Japanese and English;

Roles of a high school counselor at St. Mary’s:

Academic counseling:
Scheduling (powerschool)
Works with students, parents and teachers to support student success and access
Review students progress throughout the quarter
Identify at-risk students, work with learning support team, and make credit recovery plan for students when necessary
Inform sophomores of class options for IB configuration and college impact.

Emotional counseling:
Individual counseling
Refer to counselors outside of school for ongoing counseling support
Work with community agencies such as TELL to support students and families
Attend PD workshops to be up-to-date with best practices and community resources and network
Actively involved with child safeguarding policy and team at SMIS
Continue to develop our vertical advisory program with relevant wellbeing topics and content

College/university counseling:
Support juniors and seniors throughout the college application process
Schedule 120+ college/university visits and presentations per school year
Organize college information sessions and presentations to high school students and parents (Grade 10 College Presentation, Grade 11 College Presentation, Grade 12 College Presentation, spring weekly small group sessions for juniors, etc.)
Provide junior family conferences for all juniors and parents
Attend PD and networking conferences such as International ACAC, CIS EARCOS, CIS Forum, and counselor fly-ins
