West Yas Academy is an American Curriculum school located on Yas Island, and its inaugural term was in August 2016. The school is a part of Aldar Academies, one of the UAE's largest providers of leading private education, with schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, rated outstanding by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge.

West Yas Academy is our first Massachusetts State Curriculum school in Abu Dhabi, which is the most highly regarded and successful public school curriculum in the United States. The Massachusetts Curriculum draws on a rich history of academic excellence and rigor, and has historically benefited from proximity to and interaction with higher education institutions such as Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES



• To guide and counsel individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans, which may include:

o Meeting with students whose names appear on the low grade list for each marking period and, if appropriate, formulating a plan of action for success involving the student and the parent;

o Planning and/or promoting programs which enhance the academic, social or emotional growth of students, e.g., Curriculum Fair, Career Fair, Graduation, opportunities for student enrichment and/or remediation, scholarship opportunities and parent informational programs;

o Meeting with seniors once each semester and mailing updates on their
graduation status to their parents

o Working with students who have discipline, attendance and academic problems and are referred by teachers, parents or administrators;
o Insuring that students are aware of requirements for graduation and college admission;
o Guiding each student to choose courses consistent with his/her interests, abilities and career plans;
o Helping students develop post-secondary educational plans in accordance with their interests, abilities and career plans;
o Assisting students with the completion of college admissions applications;
o Interpreting test results to students and/or parents on request;
o Assisting the principal in the preparation of diploma lists;
o Assuring that appropriate, accurate information is maintained in each student’s permanent, cumulative record; and
o Making necessary schedule changes for individual students that are both appropriate for their abilities and aligned with their educational and career plans.
o To facilitate small groups for individual students with identified, common needs

To consult with and serve as a resource for students, staff and parents regarding developmental needs of students, which may include:

i. Identification and referral of students for Student Tier Intervention Meetings;
ii. Active participation in Special Education meetings
iii. Conference with individual students who have experienced a death
in the family or serious illness and notification of their teachers.

Work with teachers to better help them understand students with physical or emotional challenges.

• To refer students and parents/guardians to appropriate school and community resources;
• To participate in, coordinate, conduct activities which contribute to the effective implementation of the high school component of the K-12 guidance curriculum;
• To evaluate and revise the building guidance and counselling program;
• To assist in the development of the Assessment Program and the interpretation of testing and assessment results related to University and career guidance; and
• To continue personal professional growth and development.

General Responsibilities:
• Assist academy in achieving its overall vision and strategic intentions and to contribute to the achievement of relevant targets as set out in the academy’s improvement plan and self-evaluation form

• Comply with regulations pertaining to health and safety at work legislation and adhere to academy policies relating to safe working practice and equal opportunities regulations

• Comply with the academy’s Performance Management Policy ensuring challenging annual targets are set and to fulfil the role of performance management reviewer if directed to do so by the Principal

• Engage in annual training linked to child protection, safeguarding and health and safety together with all training deemed appropriate for the purpose of academy improvement or performance management

• Comply with the academy’s staff dress code at all times including the wearing of photo ID / lanyard

• Comply with the academy’s computer Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) at all times

• Attend all staff briefings/Professional Development Activities



Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks Planning, Preparation, Teaching and
Lesson Management


• Teach allocated students by supporting their planning and teaching to achieve outstanding progression of learning through:

• Oversee the development and refreshing of curriculum unit planning within the faculty department

• Keep up to date, utilize, and apply Inquiry Based principles

• Create a climate that is conducive for outstanding Learning and Teaching by serving as a pedagogical coach and mentor of faculty in line with the school’s performance management framework

• Identifying clear learning objectives and specifying how they will be taught and assessed

• Setting tasks which challenge students and ensure high levels of interest

• Setting appropriate and demanding expectations

• Setting clear targets, building on prior attainment

• Identifying SEN or very able students

• Providing clear structures for lessons maintaining pace, motivation and challenge


• Making effective use of assessment and ensure coverage of programmes of study


• Making effective use of performance data and key indicators to inform planning and therefore deliver differentiated learning – matched to need


• Ensuring effective teaching and best use of available time

• Maintaining an effective learning environment in accordance with the academy's procedures and encouraging good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework

• Apply a variety of teaching methods to:

i. match approach to content, structure information, present a set of key ideas and use appropriate vocabulary

ii. use effective questioning and listen carefully to students.

iii. select appropriate learning resources and develop study skills through library, I.C.T. and other learning technologies

• Ensuring students acquire and consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to the subject taught

• Evaluating own and others teaching critically to improve effectiveness

• Ensuring the effective and efficient deployment of classroom support

Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting

• Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use them to improve specific aspects of teaching;

• Mark and monitor students' work and set targets for progress

• Using performance data to inform planning and therefore ensuring the
Learning and Teaching continue to ‘add value

• Assess and record students' progress systematically and keep records to check work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and areas for development, inform planning and recognize the level at which the student is achieving

• Undertake assessment of students as requested by examination bodies, departmental and academy procedures

• Prepare and present informative reports to parents
